Want to cruise but do it solo? We've answered some common questions all first-time solo cruisers often have.
Won’t I get lonely cruising on my own?
Not at all. There’s a ready-made family of new friends to be made on board, nonstop entertainment where you can buddy up with others, be that for the shows, quizzes, or lectures, and guided tours ashore are ideal if you are a bit nervous about exploring strange lands alone.
What's it like?
Very liberating. Whether you fancy a lie-in or late lunch, want to go cycling with new chums, sign up for a cooking class ashore, or just feel like having a quiet night in, feel free. You only have yourself to think about so you can spend your days as you please.
Fixed or open-seating for dinner?
We like open seating as you meet different people each evening; others prefer an assigned table as it can be daunting to walk into a restaurant and ask to share with strangers, especially the first night. The thing is, on a cruise, you have the choice.
Will I have to pay for a solo supplement?
Many cruise lines have ditched or reduced supplements, making cruising affordable for lone travellers. Remember, all food is served in the dining room, and self-service is included, as well as all the entertainment.
Oceans or rivers?
Both are great. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Ambassador Cruise Lines have lots of single cabins. Fred Olsen also has solo drinks parties, get-togethers and dance hosts to help those travelling alone break the ice.
Check out Norwegian Cruise Line, too. It’s a great favourite with solo travellers, as several of its ships have single Studio cabins and exclusive lounges where they can meet up.
On the rivers, Riviera Travel has 13 supplement-free river cruises exclusively for solo travellers this year. They are across various rivers, including the Rhine and Moselle, the Douro in Portugal and the Seine and Rhône in France.
